Colorectal Surgery for IBD That Keeps Natural Function
When a portion of the intestines or rectum needs to be removed to treat IBD, our surgeons seek to preserve as much natural function as possible. Colorectal surgery often requires an ostomy. However, as much as they can, AdventHealth Digestive Institute's surgeons offer J-pouch surgery that only involves a temporary stoma, or hole in the abdomen that allows stool to exit. A second surgery reconnects the intestines internally. This means the patient will no longer need an external ostomy bag.
Should a patient require a procedure that removes part of the rectum, our surgeons take efforts to preserve the sphincter muscle at the anal opening. Both this sphincter-preserving surgery approach and J-pouch surgery allow patients to void more like they did before their surgery.
