Medical Education

The doctors at the AdventHealth Digestive Health Institute are preeminent leaders in their fields and are active in training current and future physicians and surgeons. Hailing from medical schools and training centers such as Harvard, Cleveland Clinic, University of Chicago, UPMC and the Mayo Clinic, most of DHI’s doctors have one foot firmly planted in clinical research even as they care for their patients. Some of them also hold academic positions at the region’s medical schools.

Our doctors train residents and fellows, pioneer new surgical approaches, are principal investigators for cancer clinical trials and widely publish and present their research in medical journals and at conferences. They demonstrate their commitment to the next generation of digestive health medical experts by give back to the community by piquing university students’ interest in the medical field and paving the way for more women to enter surgical careers. They also regularly share their knowledge with other doctors, physician assistants and nurses through CME seminars and summits.

Continuing Medical Education (CME)

Throughout the year, AdventHealth Digestive Health Institute offers opportunities for clinicians to earn CME credits. Past CME events have covered hepatic, gallbladder and biliary tree tumors and cancers; gastroesophageal reflux disease; robotic surgery versus laparoscopic surgical approaches; and more. Residency and Fellowship Programs

The doctors at AdventHealth Digestive Health Institute run robust programs that train new physicians as well as surgeons who want to deepen their skill sets. AdventHealth Digestive Health Institute is a site for the University of South Florida College of Medicine’s residency program in Gastroenterology. Women in Surgery (WIS) Career Symposium

Though we are well into the 21st century, women continue to be underrepresented in the field of surgery. AdventHealth Digestive Health Institute surgeon Sharona Ross, MD, is the founder and chair of Women in Surgery (WIS), an organization formed to encourage women to choose careers in surgery and to support women currently in the discipline. Through an annual symposium that attracts national and international medical professionals and students, Dr. Ross seeks to change the fact that while more than half of today’s medical students are female, fewer than 1 in 5 surgeons is.
