For her dedication and excellence in patient care, Patient Preferred Physicians and Practitioners proudly named Dr. Sharona B. Ross, MD, FACS, a Patient Preferred Surgeon for upper gastrointestinal benign and malignant diseases as well as pancreatic and biliary cancers representing the state of Florida for 2020.
With nearly two decades of achievements in her field, Dr. Ross serves patients at the Digestive Health Institute at AdventHealth in Tampa, FL. She is a Professor of Surgery at University of Central Florida, the Director of Minimally Invasive and Robotic Surgery and Surgical Endoscopy at AdventHealth Tampa. She is also the director of the Advanced GI and HPB Surgery Fellowship at the Digestive Health Institute, which trains new surgeons to master minimally invasive single site laparoscopic and robotic complex surgery.
Highly skilled in advanced foregut and HPB surgery, Dr. Ross specializes in robotic and single incision laparoscopic operations, and is one of the few surgeons in the United States to offer patients robotic complex abdominal operations for esophageal, stomach, small bowel, pancreatic, liver, and gallbladder cancers. Dr. Ross is also one of the first surgeons in the United States to offer laparoscopic single site (LESS) surgery and has been instrumental in developing new techniques to improve the safety of the application.
Patients of Dr. Ross have praised her work over the years, rating her five-stars for expertise, knowledge and bedside manner. “Excellent, intelligent, kind doctor,” read an appreciative patient review at Healthgrades.com.
“Dr. Ross has helped me for eight years,” read another five-star review. “Thanks to her and their team I am healthier. The diagnostic and approach to every problem set them apart.”
A true inspiration, Dr. Ross founded the Women in Surgery International Career Symposium (WIS), a professional and academic event dedicated to encouraging women to pursue a medical career in surgery. Attendees of WIS learn the issues and challenges confronting women as they seek to advance in a changing, but still male-dominated field. These women interact, exchange ideas and formulate effective career strategies with surgical professionals and students; share success stories and gain knowledge on how to break the glass ceiling in surgery. Dr Ross was awarded the 2018 Nina Starr Braunwald award by the Association of Women Surgeons.
Dr. Ross was born and raised in Israel, where she had to join the military immediately after high school, a requirement for all citizens of Israel. In an interview with Tampa bay parenting, Dr. Ross said her accomplishments in life can be contributed to her military service. “I learned to be independent, focused, organized and think outside the box,” she told the magazine. “I learned how to lead people and developed problem-solving skills. All in all, my military service provided me with the necessary tools to build and shape my future.”
After her two years of military service in the Israel Defense Forces, she moved to the U.S., where she graduated Phi Beta Kappa and Summa Cum Ladue from the American University in Washington, DC in 2001. She went on to receive her Medical Degree from the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences in Washington, DC, where she graduated Alpha Omega Alpha.
Dr. Ross completed her General Surgery residency at the University Of South Florida College Of Medicine, Department of General Surgery in 2006, and was later awarded the prestigious HPB/Advanced Gastrointestinal Surgery and Minimally Invasive Surgery Fellowship at USF/Tampa General Hospital, 2007. She then completed an Endoscopic Gastroenterology Fellowship at the Division of Digestive Disorders and Nutrition, Department of Medicine University of South Florida, 2008.
Dedicated to achieving the best in patient care and treatment, Dr. Ross maintains present memberships with the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) Program Committee, Co-Chair of Technology Committee, Development Committee, and Robotic Task Force Committee. She is on the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons (SLS) International Advisory Board, Chair of the Technology, Innovation, and Standardization Committee, Member of GERD Committee, and Women in Surgery Committee. She is an executive member of the video based education committee of the American College of Surgeons, the program committee of the Americas Hepato Pancreato-Biliary Association (AHPBA) , the HPB Program Committee of the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract (SSAT) and finally on the Southeastern Surgical Congress (SESC) Program Committee and Women in Surgery Committee.
Sought after for her knowledge and expertise, Dr. Ross has been a moderator, presenter and key-note speaker at over 100 events; over 110 peer reviewed publications, over 30 news articles, has over 100 oral presentations and over 160 operative videos presentations. She is also on the editorial board of several surgical journals; include journal of gastroenterology and hepatology research, journal of gastro intestinal surgery, ISRN minimally invasive surgery, surgical endoscopy, society of laparoendoscopic surgeons, and annals of surgery. Dr. Ross is affiliated with AdventHealth Tampa and is fluent in English and Hebrew.
Based on her experience, as both a mother of four and a sought-after surgeon, Dr. Ross is a firm believer that women can accomplish anything they want, and is a champion for women in medicine. For her commitment to her field and for achieving excellence year after year in patient care, Dr. Sharona B. Ross now holds the title of “Patient Preferred Surgeon” for 2020!
