The American College of Surgeons conference is the largest in the world. Over 10,000 surgeons attended this year's event. The ACS is a multidisciplinary conference, which includes surgeons from different specialties. At this year ACS, I gave several presentations. One of the residents who work with me presented our study regarding the perception of surgery among 2nd-year medical students (prior to their exposure to surgeons and the surgical field in general). It was very well accepted. Our study showed that medical students, prior to their clinical rotations, have a very negative perception of Surgery and therefore are discouraged from entering the field. This is precisely why I made it a goal of mine to improve that perception for all students but especially for women medical students.
