Understanding Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is when the muscles in your throat relax more than normal while sleeping, blocking your airway. When this happens, you stop breathing. When your brain realizes it's not getting enough oxygen, it wakes you up to reopen the airway. These disruptions to your sleep cycle — sometimes dozens of times a night — can leave you exhausted.

Untreated OSA can lead to problems beyond snoring and feeling wiped out, like high blood pressure, heart attack or even stroke. Treatment can involve lifestyle changes like weight loss, wearing a mask to keep your airway open or surgery.

Lifesaving Technology: Dr. Swanson Explains ECMO

Our experienced pulmonary team at AdventHealth Tampa offers extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), which is a bypass process that adds oxygen to the blood of patients whose lungs are too diseased to work well. Patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) who don’t respond to other therapies may be candidates for ECMO. ECMO may also help patients with refractory hypoxemia caused by an acute respiratory condition like asthma, aspiration pneumonitis, viral/bacterial pneumonia, pulmonary embolism or other respiratory condition.

Hear more about ECMO from Dr. Swanson, or for more information, please call Call813-615-7777.
